🎖️ VA Benefits Overview

If you served in the U.S. military, you may be entitled to a wide range of benefits — and many veterans don't know what they qualify for. The VA offers these core benefit programs:

Healthcare

Free or low-cost medical care through VA hospitals and community clinics. All veterans who served on active duty with other than a dishonorable discharge may be eligible. Veterans who served in combat zones after 9/11 or were exposed to toxins (including burn pits) now have enhanced eligibility under the PACT Act of 2022 — the largest expansion of VA benefits in 30 years.

To enroll: Call 1-877-222-8387 (Mon–Fri, 8am–8pm ET) or apply at va.gov/health-care/apply

Disability Compensation

Tax-free monthly payments for service-connected conditions. Rated 0%–100%. You can apply any time after service — there is no deadline. Current 2026 monthly rates for a veteran with no dependents:

Rates increase if you have a spouse, children, or dependent parents. Payments are adjusted annually with Social Security COLA — a 2.8% increase took effect December 1, 2025.

Pension

Monthly tax-free benefit for wartime veterans 65 or older, or permanently disabled, with limited income and net worth. Eligible wartime periods include WWII, Korea, Vietnam (Nov 1955–May 1975), and Gulf War (Aug 1990–present).

VA Home Loan Guarantee

Life Insurance (SGLI / VGLI)

Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) covers active duty members up to $500,000. After separation, veterans have 1 year and 120 days to convert to Veterans' Group Life Insurance (VGLI) — no medical exam required if you apply within 240 days of separation.

Survivors Benefits (DIC)

Surviving spouses of veterans who died in service or from a service-connected condition may receive Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC). The base rate in 2026 is $1,699.36/month, tax-free. Additional amounts apply for children or if the veteran was totally disabled for 8+ years before death.

💡 It is always FREE to apply for VA benefits. Never pay someone to file a basic VA claim. Call 1-800-827-1000 (Mon–Fri, 8am–9pm ET) or visit va.gov to apply for most benefits online.

🏥️ VA Healthcare

VA healthcare is one of the most valuable benefits available to veterans. It is not health insurance — it is a comprehensive medical benefits package.

Who's Eligible?

What's Covered?

Priority Groups

When you enroll, VA assigns you to one of 8 priority groups (1 = highest priority). Your group affects your copayment amounts — some veterans pay nothing. Veterans with service-connected disabilities of 50%+ are in the highest groups and typically pay no copays.

How to Enroll

💡 Even if you have Medicare or private insurance, VA healthcare may cover conditions your other insurance doesn't — especially service-connected issues. Having other insurance does NOT make you ineligible for VA care.

🧠 Mental Health & Crisis Resources

Mental health is health. The VA provides comprehensive mental health services — and you do NOT need a service-connected condition to access most of them.

Employment Resources

💡 When applying for federal jobs, veterans with a service-connected disability of 30%+ qualify for Schedule A hiring — a separate, expedited hiring path. Ask the HR office specifically about Schedule A.

📋 Disability Claims — How It Works

A VA disability rating (0–100%) determines your monthly tax-free compensation. Here's how to navigate the system:

Three Types of Claims

Presumptive Conditions

For certain conditions, VA automatically assumes service caused them — you don't need to prove the connection. Examples:

How the Combined Rating Works

VA does NOT simply add ratings together. They use a "whole person" method — each rating takes a percentage of your remaining health. Example: 50% + 50% does NOT equal 100% — it equals 75%, rounded to 80%. This is why a small increase in ratings can make a big difference in actual pay.

TDIU — Work Around the Rating System

Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU) allows veterans who cannot work due to service-connected disabilities to receive 100% compensation even with a lower rating. You generally need one condition rated at 60%+ or multiple conditions totaling 70%+.

How to File

If You're Denied

⚠️ You should NEVER pay anyone upfront to file a basic VA disability claim. VSO help is always free. Attorneys can only charge a fee AFTER a successful appeal — and fees are regulated by VA.

🚩 Scams & Red Flags

Veterans are heavily targeted by scammers. Know these warning signs before giving anyone your personal information or money:

⚠️ Report veteran benefit scams to the VA OIG Hotline: 1-800-488-8244 (Mon–Wed & Fri 8:30am–4pm ET). Fraud costs veterans real money and real benefits.

💡 Only VA-accredited VSO representatives, claims agents, and attorneys can legally assist with VA claims. Verify accreditation at va.gov/ogc/apps/accreditation. Initial VSO help is always 100% free.

📚 Plain-English Glossary

VA and military language can be confusing. Here are the terms you'll encounter most — explained simply:

DD-214
Your Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty. The single most important document for accessing any VA benefit. Keep multiple certified copies in safe locations — losing it can delay benefits significantly. You can replace a lost DD-214 for free through the National Archives (archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records).
Service-Connected Disability
A physical or mental condition caused, aggravated, or worsened by your military service. Qualifying conditions entitle you to monthly tax-free disability compensation. You can apply any time after discharge — there is no deadline.
C&P Exam (Compensation & Pension)
A medical exam VA uses to evaluate the severity of your service-connected condition. Your examiner's findings heavily influence your disability rating. Prepare by documenting your worst days — not how you feel the day of the exam. Bring a written list of all symptoms and how they affect your daily life.
VSO (Veterans Service Organization)
Organizations like DAV, VFW, American Legion, and AMVETS that provide FREE help filing VA claims and appeals. Always use an accredited VSO before paying anyone for benefits help. Their representatives are trained and VA-accredited at no cost to you.
PACT Act
The Sergeant First Class Heath Robinson Honoring our Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act, signed in 2022. The largest expansion of VA benefits in 30 years. Expanded healthcare eligibility and presumptive service connection for veterans exposed to burn pits, Agent Orange, radiation, and other hazardous materials.
Combined Rating
VA doesn't add ratings together — they use a "whole person" formula. A 50% rating + another 50% = 75% (rounded to 80%), NOT 100%. This is why understanding how ratings stack is critical to maximizing your benefits.
TDIU (Total Disability Individual Unemployability)
If your service-connected disabilities prevent you from working, you may receive 100% disability compensation even with a rating below 100%. In 2025, the yearly income limit for TDIU recipients was $15,650 from employment.
Nexus Letter
A letter from a physician establishing a medical connection between your current condition and your military service. Often the single most important piece of evidence in a disability claim. Without a nexus, many valid claims are denied. Your own VA doctor can write one.
BDD (Benefits Delivery at Discharge)
File your disability claim 180–90 days before separation from active duty so VA can begin processing before you leave service. Benefits may begin sooner after discharge. Available to active duty service members at any installation.
HUD-VASH
Housing and Urban Development-VA Supportive Housing. Combines permanent rental housing vouchers from HUD with VA case management. The nation's largest program for homeless veterans — over 116,000 vouchers awarded since 2008.
MST (Military Sexual Trauma)
Sexual assault or repeated threatening sexual harassment during military service. VA provides free mental health care for MST to ALL veterans regardless of discharge status, era of service, or whether the incident was reported. No service connection required.
DIC (Dependency and Indemnity Compensation)
Tax-free monthly payments to surviving spouses and dependents of veterans who died in service or from a service-connected condition. Base rate in 2026 is $1,699.36/month with additional amounts for children and qualifying circumstances.
Presumptive Condition
A condition VA automatically assumes was caused by service — you don't have to prove the connection, only that you served in the qualifying location or period. Greatly expanded under the PACT Act for toxic exposure veterans.
COE (Certificate of Eligibility)
Document from VA confirming your eligibility for a VA Home Loan. Required by lenders. Can be obtained instantly online through VA.gov or through any VA-approved lender.
